What is screen printing?
This is the method of using ink to create a design or logo onto a material surface. Screen printing has a long history and can be traced back as far as China during the Song Dynasty. It is commonly used to reproduce detailed and high-quality prints on various materials, including fabric, paper, glass, metal, and plastic. With screen printing you can achieve bright and vibrant colours for your artworks. It is also a very cost effective method to produce high quality results when compared to alternative printing techniques.
How does screen printing work?
In screen printing, ink is pushed through a mesh screen onto the chosen fabric or surface. For this to work you select a design and create a template, then attach a mesh screen to a frame. A stencil is then used to transfer your design to your surface. Once you have finished the process, you will need to cure your ink, and this can be done in several ways.
How to set screen printing ink
There is more than one method you can follow to achieve great results with your screen printing. To ensure that your ink pigments properly bond to your chosen fabric, you will need to set your ink, and this can be done with a number of options. While these methods may vary depending on the type of ink used, heat is used to cure your artworks in most cases. If you don’t have any professional printing tools such as a heat press, you can experiment using an iron and parchment paper, using a heat gun at least 10 cm away from your surface, or even using the oven in your kitchen. For better results, see the instructions of your ink. Bear in mind that if you don't set your ink properly, it can fade and crack quickly.
